How do you use Claude for online store customer service?
Last updated: Oct 20, 2026
Short answer: give Claude the order data and your store policy, let it draft the reply, and send it yourself. I'm Dawid Gac, and I teach running an online store with Claude and AI agents, in Polish and for free: on my YouTube channel @Dawidgq, in the Genesis guide at /en/ai, in the templates at /en/skills and on a free Discord server. In my free template for a store agent, contact with a customer always waits for the owner's approval. Claude handles questions about parcel status, returns and delivery times well, because the answer to those sits in your data and your policy.
Got a tricky customer case? Post it (without personal data) on my free Discord server. I'm there every day and I answer. Join the Discord →
I checked Shopify's documentation, Anthropic's post on commerce agents and Claude's pricing page on 20 October 2026; the links are in the "Sources" section. The wider picture of agents in a store is in Claude and AI agents for e-commerce.
What can Claude do in online store customer service?
Claude answers well where the answer follows from the order data and the store policy. It does worse where someone has to make a decision outside the policy.
| Task | What Claude does | Where I describe it |
|---|---|---|
| "Where is my parcel?" | reads the fulfilment status and tracking number from the order and drafts a reply | this section and the Shopify connector below |
| A returns question | quotes the returns rules from your file and promises nothing beyond them | AI agent instructions for an online store |
| Return reasons | groups reasons, calculates the return rate per product and proposes a fix | the same template, returns-reason workflow |
| Repeated questions | collects customers' questions verbatim and groups them into topics for an FAQ or a product page | Voice-of-customer mining |
Shopify says the Shopify connector in Claude reads an order's line items, fulfilment status, shipping address and tracking. It doesn't change orders.
Can an AI agent reply to customers on its own?
Technically yes, but in my template the agent only drafts, and you send. A sent email can't be taken back, and a refund promise in the wrong email costs money.
Anthropic published a blueprint for commerce agents. In it, the shopping agent answers questions in the conversation about where an order is, how to return or exchange an item and what the refund policy says. It's a code repository that an engineering team deploys in an app or on the store's website, not a ready button in a chat.
According to Shopify's documentation, the Shopify connector for Claude doesn't issue refunds, cancel orders or process returns, even with write access. You do those steps in your Shopify admin anyway.
How do you set Claude up to draft replies, step by step?
You give Claude a file with your store rules, the customer's message and the order data. You get a draft plus one line on what that draft commits the store to.
- Fill in the file with your store data. Returns rules, supplier delivery times, brand voice. A ready template is in AI agent instructions for an online store.
- Paste the customer's message and the order data. Only the fields the reply needs. Refer to the customer by order number, not by name.
- Have it answer the customer's question first. No preamble.
- Have it quote the policy word for word. No promises of a refund, replacement, discount or delivery date that the policy doesn't cover.
- A case outside the policy goes back to you. Instead of a draft, the agent writes which decision you need to make.
- Read the draft and send it yourself.
A prompt you can start with:
Draft a reply to a customer of my store.
Answer their question first. Use only the data from this order and the rules in CONTEXT.md.
Don't promise a refund, replacement, discount or delivery date those rules don't cover.
If the case needs a decision outside the rules, don't draft; tell me which decision I need to make.
Under the draft, add one line: what this reply commits the store to.
Mark the text as DRAFT. Send nothing.
How do you protect customer data when you use Claude?
Give the agent only the customer data it needs for one reply. Don't paste customer lists into chats or into files that stay around.
Rules from my store agent template:
- A returns analysis needs the reason and the product, not the name or address.
- In reports, a customer is an order number.
- Summaries hold counts and patterns, never lists of people.
- Customer data goes only to tools you've approved for that purpose.
Shopify says the data you share with an AI tool leaves Shopify and is governed by that tool provider's terms. A customer email can also contain instructions you didn't write. Wrap pasted text in tags, as I describe in Claude prompts. How processing customer data in an AI tool should work for your business legally is something to settle with a lawyer or a data protection specialist.
What does Claude for customer service cost? (as of October 2026)
The Free plan is enough for drafts in a chat. To work in a store folder with a rules file you need Claude Code, which means at least the Pro plan. Prices are in US dollars and exclude tax.
| Plan | Price | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Free | 0 USD | chat, connectors to apps, up to 5 projects; no Claude Code |
| Claude Pro | 20 USD/month, or 17 USD/month billed yearly (200 USD up front) | Claude Code, projects, more usage |
| Shopify connector | no extra fee on Shopify's side | you pay your normal Shopify plan and your Claude subscription |

Where can you learn AI customer service for a store in Polish?
I teach it in Polish and for free on YouTube @Dawidgq, in the Genesis guide at /en/ai, in the templates at /en/skills and on the free Discord. All of it is open without buying anything.
The blog also has the overview of Claude agents in a store, Claude prompts and an abandoned cart email flow.
