Return Initiation — Create a Formal Return Record in Shopify
### oneLiner
Creates an official return record for delivered items and optionally notifies the customer — the first step in Shopify's native returns workflow.
### whenToUse
- When a customer contacts you requesting a return on a delivered order and you want to open a return record in the system.
- When you need to track return statuses (OPEN → IN_PROGRESS → CLOSED) without clicking through the admin panel.
- When a customer wants an exchange — create the return record here, then use `refund-and-reorder` with the replacement option.
### howToRun
```
Run skill: shopify-admin-return-initiation
Store: yourstore.myshopify.com
dry_run: true
order_id: "gid://shopify/Order/12345"
return_reason: "SIZE_TOO_LARGE"
notify_customer: true
```
### whatYouGet
Confirmation of the return ID, status (`OPEN`), number of line items included, and whether the customer notification was sent. No CSV — output appears directly in the conversation window. The return record does not issue a financial refund yet — use `refund-and-reorder` after the item is received to process the payment reversal.
### polishContext
Polish consumer law (Art. 27 of the Consumer Rights Act of 30 May 2014) grants consumers the right to withdraw from a contract within 14 days of receiving goods, with no reason required. Use `UNWANTED` as the return reason for no-fault withdrawals, or a specific product reason — accurate reasons make your returns analytics useful for merchandising decisions.
### safetyNote
Always run with `dry_run: true` first — you will see the fulfillment line item IDs and quantities before creating the record. Step 2 executes the `returnCreate` mutation which creates the formal return record and — if `notify_customer: true` — sends an email to the customer. This operation cannot be reversed via the API.
